7.1.4.1 An Integrative Model of Co-production

The examples above emphasise flexibility, shared motivations and negotiated power relations at all stages and levels of co-production. The model below illustrates this. Leading co-production processes requires a context in which lay people and professionals can deliberate on their goals and motivations individually, in groups and the wider community. Negotiating power relationships can encompass issues of governance, involving the electorate and political representatives at the collective level, as well as the agreement of rules on how the deliberation should happen among professionals and service users at the group or individual level. Surfacing and reconciling different motivations is also important because citizens may prioritise interests that differ from those of paid professionals, despite both subscribing to previously agreed higher level goals. Fig. 7.1 tries to capture these connections by suggesting that context, motivations and power govern each stage of the co-production process and that each co-production stage can operate at an individual, group or collective level. The model also suggest that the collaborative evaluation of an initiative does not signify an endpoint, but informs new activities concerned with commissioning, designing and delivering services.
